I watched Anthony Starke's episode of "Cold Case" for the first time last night, and... am still achy and depressed more than 12 hours later.

I've been known to wallow in a good tearjerker from time-to-time, but I don't think I'll be watching that again any time soon.  Anthony was fantabulous, of course (and pretty pretty pretty!) but...

Ow.

My Netflix queue spit out the first volume of Voyagers! recently, and I finally got around to watching it this weekend.

Gawd, I'd forgotten how charismatic Jon-Erik Hexum was.  The show's obviously dated and cheezy as hell, but his screen-presence was enough to keep me watching the whole disk - not just for the the pretty (those eyes! that voice!  *sigh*), but there's also something in how he sells the character with both the goofy and more heroic/responsible/caring sides.  I don't know what sort of career he might have had in the long run, but it's got me feeling rather nostalgic and sad now.

It's also made me hungry for some sort of "ten years later" sort of fic for the show.  How does their situation work out as Jeff gets older (we can't let him go back to his own time for good, of course) or they encounter more complicated historical problems that fanfic writers could develop a lot better than the show could have.  *sniffle*

I'm not usually much of a network-tv watcher, so the fall season hasn't been any big whoop for me in years... but I'm looking forward to it this year.

Just venting a little energy with a quickie list of shows I'm feeling squee-ful over.

Logging some recent DVD-viewing from rentals and anime meetup.

I've had two straight months of Netflix/Greencine rentals go by where I didn't watch a *THING*.  I need to get on the ball and quit wasting money.  Should probably cancel Greencine altogether, but I have a few older series on my queue there that Netflix doesn't carry, and I'd really like to get through a few of those.  *sigh*

Oh, this does make me happy.  The Sony "Hot Ticket" Rent performance that was shown in movie theaters on limited nights (which I missed =P) is going to get a DVD release.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/playbill/20081124/en_playbill/123645

I think this movie-theater/dvd-release combo has so much potential to give theater-goers outside of the major theater hubs a chance to make Broadway a part of their lives again, so I hope it does well enough that it eventually trickles down to shows that aren't the big phenoms like Rent.

I'm having a bit of a re-awakening of my "Highlander" fandom the last couple weeks.  I received the Season 4 set as part of my order from DeepDiscount's 20%-off sale, and actually watched an episode or two, instead of just putting it away on the shelf the way I usually end up doing with these "backfill" type buys.

Since then, I've been working my way through the best of Richie Ryan in fairly random order, and it's been a rather bittersweet experience.  On the one hand, all my swoony love for this show is back in full force, and I've been finding or revisiting some great fanfic for the first time in ages.  But there's also a bit of grieving going on that the show's been over for so long.  It's like looking through photos of dead loved-ones.  Remembering the good times, but also grieving that you won't ever make new memories.  *sniffle*

It's also got me back to thinking about wanting a fandom "meetup" comm or something.  It would be nice to have someone local to share this sort of thing with.  None of my current friends/family have that squeeful-obsessive-fannish gene, but marathoning shows like this would be way more fun with company.

(Boy, my LJ's been rather random lately.  =P)

Nothing much to say about last night's episode, because it was too awesome for words, and before that high has even died down, we get *this* and the flailing begins for next week.

So, last night's episode was all kinda of awesome of course, but that last split-second shot of demon!Jensen with that little half-smirk he does... OMG, just OMG.

When demon!Dean showed up in the actual episode, I was all "Wait, but he's all bloody.  Where's the hottie clean version from the promo?!?"   So, having that moment be the punchline was a double helping of death-by-hotness.

Minor, Pointless Irritation for the Week:

I was watching the rerun of What Was and Never Should Be (or whatever the title is... is it just me, or is that a very 5th-Season-of-Andromeda sort of episode title?  ^_^ ) last night, and for such a wonderful episode with the most woobly Dean-expressions ever, it's the petty irritating bit that sticks with me.

It's at the end.  The faux-family is trying to convince Dean to just give in and enjoy life.  Mom's alive.  He's got a great girl.  Sam can have Jessica and live happily ever after.  And Dean actually thinks about it!  Not that Dean being tempted is wrong. It's great.  But it seems so obvious to me that that last bit about Sam *should* have been the clincher that convinced him to go back... because he knows now that that isn't *really* Sam.

If I was writing that scene, Dean's determination to fight would have only gone so far.  He's weighing the options, it looks like he's waivering... and then someone says something about Sam living happily ever after, and it clicks for him that actually, no, the *REAL* Sam will still be back in the real world fighting on his own, and that would be the realization that pushed him to take action.  It seems like such an obvious response to that moment, and it kinda bugs me that it didn't get touched, even in passing.

I got caught up on Dr. Who Season 3 this past week.  I'm not feeling the love.  Martha could've been a pretty kick-ass character if they had resisted the urge to go down the companion-in-love road with her.  It pisses me off quite a bit, actually.  One of the wonderful things about Dr. Who is the way the character dynamics are always changing as companions/Doctors come and go.  Could they really come up with *nothing* better for an intelligent professional to do as a companion than moon around being jealous of Rose?  The whole season pushed Rose over the edge into Mary Sue territory for me, I'm afraid.   (Alors.  I don't think I'm bound for serious fandom for this series anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter all *that* much.)

In other news:  Kinda obsessing over the Fantastic Four right now.  The new movie wasn't anything special, but I guess there were enough of the vaguely angsty-hurt-comforty Torch moments to set my fangirl gears a-churning.  Torch/Spidey is definitely appealing - though I think this is my first slash OTP where there's a major canon s.o. to be considered.  It's quite a dilemma.

Went to see The Light in the Piazza last weekend.  I was a bit disappointed because an understudy was in for Christine Andreas.  Not that the understudy didn't do a great job... it was just a "could've seen a performance by a 'big name' performer" moment.  Piazza really is a beautiful show.  I think I was expecting something kind of pretentious, but it was just sweet and touching and poignant.  My mom and I both thought the two father characters just about stole the show (even though Clara's father was only on-stage for about five minutes, there was a real honesty in those scenes that were what theater's all about to me).

The weekend before last I had a "jewelry party" at my house... the first pseudo-entertaining I've done in a long time.  I don't even *wear* jewelry all that much, but a friend has started a career selling this stuff and she begged me to host a party so she could meet her quota.  I now have about $200 worth of free jewelry (due to hostess gifts) that are all very pretty but that will probably go into a drawer and be lucky if they're worn twice before I die.  =P

Dresden Files:  Entertaining.  I'll keep watching.  Lovin' Harry, although the episode did *way* not enough to establish his character or his wizardy cred, imo. Not sure how I feel about Murphy being a major player (judging by the previews that show her in some sort of danger next week) as I'd like to get to know Harry more before we start having secondary character drama muddling things up.  Some weird editing choices that left me kind of off-kilter as to how we got from Point A to Point B.  I've seen a lot of praise for the child actor, but I thought the actress who played his mom did a great job, too.  Much more real-mother feeling than most guest-star-of-the-week people.  (Assuming mom & kid aren't going to be recurring too often, I guess.)   Loved the execution of the Raven clan.

I just caved in and bought the first Dresden book last week.  I'm glad to hear there are some pretty hefty differences in execution between the series and books, so I don't have to worry too much about the books feeling like a rehash of the series by the time I get to them.

Supernatural still rocks.  I love the little moments in the care where there's a disagreement and one of them looks like they have something to say, then backs off.  Such lovely, cuddly angstiness.  (The last episode closed on one of those moments, which is why it's in my head. :) )

On other reading fronts:  I only have about 100 pages left of my TBR book for January.  It was looking a little dicey there for a while, but I should easily finish by the end of the month.  I also finished up the final volume of Kare Kano.  Vastly squicked by the concluding mini-story for Asaba.  I know there's a tendency to romanticize this sort of thing in shoujo, and the Japanese have a different viewpoint on it overall, but... no.  I'm doubly disappointed, too, just by the fact that his character got such a shaft, period.  Asaba got some really great supporting material at some pretty powerful moments, but never got his own time in the spotlight... and in the end, he still doesn't end up with his own life, but still dragging along on Arima & Yukino's coattails. The rest of the ending was good enough, but that Asaba stuff closes things out on a really sour note for me.

Con on the Cob is getting ramped up for next year.  Wish I could think of some activities to inject a little more anime-ness into things.

Wow. Is this show for real? I feel like I've died and gone to my own personal fannish heaven. A "buddy" show that thrives on the relationships and gooey guilt and grief and love instead of trying to hide it behind the "action" agenda.

This was just such a culmination of everything that's been good about the show from early on and that I was resistant to fall for because I expected it to be a big tease...and KAPOW! There's all those lovely emotions actually getting to be the core of a finale instead of an afterthought, and the whole thing playing out ALMOST EXACTLY like I wanted it to...except, y'know, for the freakin' big semi. That was...bad. Yeah.

If this show doesn't survive the move to CW... *shudder*

And I just notice we've got a DVD announcement. Nice timing. Can't wait to go back and watch some eps. I skimmed through on the first pass. And a "sneak peak" at Season 2 as an extra? Here's hoping that's a good sign.

(And ok, I just gotta say...*SQUEEEEE* for the lovely owwies flying everywhere. Wish to hell I still had some fanfic left in me. These boys just suffer too, too prettily.)

Some comments on recent tv & anime viewing.

Wonderfalls - I developed a little crush on Tim Minear after watching the commentaries/interviews on the Firefly DVD's, so I really wanted to like this show.  Unfortunately, I don't.  Apparently this concept came from the same person who created Showtime's "Dead Like Me", and I have the same problem with both series...I find the lead characters dreary, unappealling, and annoying.  I'll probably tune in once more to find out if maybe it was just this one ep, but I'm unimpressed.

Touching Evil - Really liked this one.  I don't know if it'll keep my interest very long...I don't usually last very long with whodunit's, but I like the chemistry of the main cast and enjoyed the tension caused by the main character's little problems.  From the ads, I expected his issues to be played entirely for laughs, but if they continue putting a darker edge to his disfunction, it may keep my interest.

American Idol - Glad "pen salesman" got in.  He's not winner material, but he's different, and different is good. :)  Going into the final twelve, though, the only person I'm really eager to see sing again is LaToya London.

Witch Hunter Robin - Wah! Things really get kicking at Ep. 14, don't they! Don't know enough about what's going on to judge how satisfying it'll be in the long run, but it's the first time in a while that a series (live or animated) has had me on pins and needles waiting for the next ep.

Gundam 0080 - A classic.  The story has been done before (boy who thinks wars are "cool" learns the harsh reality through personal experience), but this is among the best, imo.  The 6-episode OVA format is ideal, too...  What ever happened to 6-episode OVA's, anyway?  They used to be all over the place: Video Girl Ai, Gunbuster, the original Tenchi Muyo...  it's a perfect length for a self-contained story.

Pretear - Eh.  Sailor Moon with a pitstop through Watase Yu territory to pick up a gaggle of bishounen.  I notice there are only thirteen eps. total.  By the time they get done with the obligatory "showcase each Knight" episodes, there'll barely be time to develop a real plot, let alone do anything with it.  I'm a big fan of magical girl shows, and I definitely got nothing against hot anime guys, but this one's just a little too by the numbers.
