Yo!

I haven't posted anything in ages, and the [community profile] snowflake_challenge going around seems fun, so here's me jumping in.  I kinda started writing this on Day 8 and was going to work backwards, but then I got distracted and it's now Day 14, so... here's Day 8 and Day 7, and I'll probably jump around from there.   :P

Something I wonder about sometimes:  Why is there so little cross-fandom discussion or meta about hurt/comfort in fandom?

It's a genre (or whatever) that has a lot of fans, it tends to be a preference that follows a person from show to show, and I personally, at least, have a number of meta-y questions that I'd love to see thrown out to a diverse group of h/c fans for discussion.

And yet, the couple multifandom comms I've seen here on LJ fizzled pretty quickly or never got off the ground...  ( *sniffles sadly at [livejournal.com profile] theonesyoulove *  ) and the one comm on DW also has no traffic.  I always wonder if its an advertising problem (word didn't get around to a broad enough group of fans that the comms existed)  or if I'm just in the minority, and most fans really have no interest in discussing their tastes outside of a specific fandom environment, comparing notes on fandoms that lend themselves to h/c, etc.   It's a bit of a bummer, really.

Been having a bit of a Jonah month that's stopped me from following online-stuff much, but needed to pop in here and do a quick pimp for FX's new show, Terriers.  It's one of those shows that's so good it makes me ache until I vent a bit of love somewhere.   (Of course, it's also been getting horrific ratings, so it's a bittersweet sort of ache, but I'm gonna enjoy it while I can. )

In various pre-airing interviews, references came up a lot to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid... and while this show isn't a western, they definitely learned their lessons in how to create a wonderful partnership between the two main characters.

Long story short: Highly recommended.  :)

Just got back from two weeks mostly-away-from-civilization and feeling a bit disconnected from all the things that were occupying my thoughts before I left, so here's some randomicity to kick-start my brain a bit.

My Netflix queue spit out the old Disney "Davy Crockett" series with Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen, and I watched it over the weekend for a bit of nostalgia.

I now remember why this stuck with me enough to put it in the queue to begin with... it's got some lovely buddy-ship chemistry between Davy and Georgie, despite the rather gee-shucks corniness of the whole thing.  There's this bit where the two are walking through a forest and Georgie is singing the Davy Crockett song, and Davy has this sort of fond exasperation about it that just speaks volumes.  Makes me squee a smidge. *g*

I wants me some fic.

(It does feel a bit odd to be getting a squishy like this over *Buddy Ebsen*, though.  I mean, dude, it's Jed Clampett!  And Barnaby!  Barnaby, fer chrissakes!  I feel like I ought to be making a fandom!Secrets post or something.  ^_^)

Well, I was feeling hypocritical after pushing AO3 at Bast a couple weeks ago, while having to admit that I hadn't joined yet myself...  so I went and got myself all AO3'd up.  I haven't decided what to do about drabbles yet, but my handful of "real" fic is now archived in one place for posterity.   :)

The process made me look a little harder at my old Sentinel things than I have in a quite a while, and that was... not as awful as I expected.  Clunky, eminently forgettable writing, yes, but enough little "A-ha! That bit's good." moments to keep them from being complete embarrassments.

It is odd, though, to think about how invested I was in Blair back in the day.  He's obviously a world-class h/c-magnet, so it makes *sense* that I'd ping onto him.  But when I think about TS nowadays, my focus is very much on Jim and his issues.  Blair is tied up in those issues, yes, but I don't really have that "Let's whump Blair and see Jim go ballistic" urge anymore.  I should pull out the DVD's and revisit this series.  I'm really curious now how it will go over if I'm not watching through a Blair-whump filter.   (Or if the filter will come back once I freshen my memory. ^_^ )

"The Losers" looks eff-in' awesome!

I've just watched the trailer three times in a row, and it just gets more squee-inducing with each watch.  It gives almost a sense of a live-action anime in the combination of sheer kick-ass awesome and humor... which I guess is close, since it's apparently a comics adaptation.  Chris Evans' character is *clearly* made for me to fangirl over.  :)

I wish I was more skilled at maneuvering in the world of comics.  I'm intrigued enough to want to check out the source material, but I'm not looking forward to the quagmire of confusion I always end up in when I go hunting for something like this.

From [livejournal.com profile] fannish5:
What 5 series would you resurrect if you could?

I'm blithely ignoring issues of actors having aged or moved on.

1.  Weiss Side B
No contest.  The way this manga puttered out and then got dropped with barely a whimper of closure is going to stick in my craw for a good long while.  There were so many things I was *hoping* to see that may not have happened, but now it will forever feel like that longed-for arc was *just* around the corner, if only...    I'm left without any epic reunion arc (even a temporary one) with Yohji and Omi coming to the forefront.  No reveal that everything was some grand conspiracy by Rosenkreuz.   Barely a dent in the whole Interleukin-whatever plot that was the whole *point* of the series.  No big flashback to "Side A".  Argh! Not fair.

2.  Magnificent Seven
Obvious choice is obvious.

3.  Gabriel Knight
Who ends a *video game* series on a cliffhanger?  Seriously.  Despite having only three games to their names, Gabe and Grace and the whole schattenjaeger mythos are so amazing, I'd give anything to go back to that well one more time for some closure.

4.  Moon Over Miami
Gotta stick a wildcard in here.  No one else has even heard of this show, I'm sure.  It starred Billy Campbell (*swoon*) and Ally Walker as a bickering-detective duo a la Moonlighting or Remington Steele.  The episodes that managed to air were definitely rough around the edges, but the chemistry between the two leads was faboo, and the show had this jazzy quirkiness all its own.  It's always the first show I think of when talk turns to late, lamented shows that never got off the ground.  So, I'd just *have* to use my godlike powers to revisit it if I could.

5.  Firefly
It was actually a toss-up between this and Earth 2, but E2 would've been a nostalgia pick, and I already covered that in #4.  There's no question that Firefly deserved a longer life.

Runner-Up:  SG:A.  I can't say the show ever made it to must-see-TV status for me, but the cast and characters are some of the most likeable and just plain fun-to-watch out there.  They got shafted.

Just some things that are making me happy today.  :)

  • Trailer for the Nine movie, yay! I've been feeling a bit bereft of new movies to look forward to, now that Star Trek is out, so this comes at a good time.   http://www.apple.com/trailers/weinstein/nine/

  • I'm going to MediaWest*Con next week. This is the first con I've been to in a while, and my first ever media-fandom con. Again, this comes at a really good time. When I originally registered for MW*C, it was on a bit of a whim and I just wanted to try a convention that wasn't an anime-con populated by hordes of annoying teenagers. Since my fannish focus was pretty heavily on anime at the time, I didn't expect much content at MW*C to be tailored to my specific interests, but in the last six weeks, my focus has swung rather drastically back toward the live-action side of the spectrum. I'm currently obsessing over The Magnificent Seven ( yeah, only about ten years late... ^_^ ) and NCIS ( Hey! A show that's still on the air for a change! ) , and looking over the MW*C programming schedule, it turns out that both series are well-represented in the panels, so that's a big "Yay!"

  • Speaking of Mag7 and NCIS... GAWD, I'd forgotten how much fun reading fanfiction can be. I think I've read more fic in the last three weeks than I had in the past ten YEARS. There was one active period in there when I first discovered Weiss, but other than that, I haven't devoured fic like this since back in my Sentinel days.

  • Just got a notice from HLJ that the "Real Action Heroes" Roy Mustang figure that I'd put on backorder and *totally* forgot about ordering has shipped. (http://www.hlj.com/product/MEDRAH-350) I love these "real action heroes" figures. Their poseability and the attention to detail in their costumes gives them a notch up in terms of their acceptability for me to display in my geeky-yet-tasteful home-decorating schema. :)   (Plus, they're actually for *male* characters, rather than half-nekkid babes.) Now I just wish I hadn't missed out on the matching Ed & Al figures from the series... though the price for all three would probably have been prohibitive anyway. *harumph*

Today's episode of Real Drive fucking ROCKS.

Souta Aoi is giving Ken Hidaka a serious run for his money in the "anime characters Jenny is most obsessed with" derby.

And shipping him with Holon?  Made of awesome.

I'm not usually one to get all excited by "cool fight scenes", but the fights in this series are really interesting.  Maybe it's just that they use a few more realistic-sounding thwacks and grunts or something, but there's an immediacy to them that's much more interesting than your usual stylized anime fight.  I love it.

I'm having a bit of a re-awakening of my "Highlander" fandom the last couple weeks.  I received the Season 4 set as part of my order from DeepDiscount's 20%-off sale, and actually watched an episode or two, instead of just putting it away on the shelf the way I usually end up doing with these "backfill" type buys.

Since then, I've been working my way through the best of Richie Ryan in fairly random order, and it's been a rather bittersweet experience.  On the one hand, all my swoony love for this show is back in full force, and I've been finding or revisiting some great fanfic for the first time in ages.  But there's also a bit of grieving going on that the show's been over for so long.  It's like looking through photos of dead loved-ones.  Remembering the good times, but also grieving that you won't ever make new memories.  *sniffle*

It's also got me back to thinking about wanting a fandom "meetup" comm or something.  It would be nice to have someone local to share this sort of thing with.  None of my current friends/family have that squeeful-obsessive-fannish gene, but marathoning shows like this would be way more fun with company.

(Boy, my LJ's been rather random lately.  =P)

On a "gen" fanfiction mailing list recently, there's been discussion about trying to increase the traffic on the list with doing theme weeks or assigning people to do fic recs a la crack_van.  I started feeling guilty and wanting to participate more, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that I don't really have that many "gen" fics among my favorites these days.  I might come up with a handful of "mostly gen" Weiss recs, I guess, but all my other fandoms are either so small that there's barely any worthwhile fic out there at all, or else so committed to one or two pairings that the concept of gen-fic barely enters the fandoms consciousness (or, more often, a combination of both of those issues.)

I think I was so spoiled by my first fandom (The Sentinel had a fairly iron-clad divide between the slash and gen sides of the pool, and the gen side had enough quality writers contributing to it that you didn't need to go hunting for slash to fill the need for good fic.)   Thanks to TS, I still go into every new fannish love subconsciously expecting to find big pointy arrows saying "Gen This Way--->" and am always rather surprised when I find out that the reason there are no pointy arrows is that there is no gen-fic to speak of.  :(

It's not that I don't do slash.  I wouldn't give up my Aya/Ken for anything.  But there are times when you just want something more than another shipper story, y'know.  *sigh*

(*cough* This has nothing to do with my complete failure to find any decently written Riley h/c in National Treasure fandom.  Honest.  *cough* )

Just a quick inventory of shows, books, etc. that have hit me in a fannish way.  I tend to gravitate more toward individual characters rather than particular pairings, probably because I'm still very gen-oriented, especially in regards to live action fandoms, so pairings aren't quite as much of a deal.  Thus, in most cases, I'm listing my OTC, rather than an OTP.

I haven't spent too much time digging for stories in most of these, so I'm ending up rambling a bit on what I like/dislike/wish-I-could-find in what fic I *have* come across.

These are in brainstorming order, so completely random except that I probably thought of fandoms I like most earliest.

There's nothing quite like that little thrill of adding a new favorite character to the list, and me being me, it's usually a character who gives me an h/c jolt. Just watched the first volume of "Berserk" and knew on first sight that Judeau was gonna be my baby. :) That laid-back attitude, the whole "reconnaissance scouts are cool" factor, the knife skills, the wide grin and those FRECKLES! *swoon*

Oh, man, I am *so* enjoying this.

I used to fancy myself an adequate writer back in the day, but my weakness has always been the long game.  My plotting just sucks.  I can usually manage to capture a single scene pretty well... I like to think I've got a decent command of the language, decent ear for dialog, etc.  But figuring out how to get characters from Point A to Point Z along a plausible and interesting path always stumped me.

So, this idea of drabbling as it's own little artform is wunderbar!  This focus on capturing a moment or scene to perfection within guidelines...it's almost like a poetry/fiction crossbreed.

My couple pieces this week have been very satisfying in a "get back on the horse" kinda way.  Don't know if I'll have the nerve to write anything once the relative freedom of the "crossover" theme is over and it's back to just the Weiss universe, but I am *so* enjoying all the variety in challenge approaches from the community on the whole. Heart-breaking drama one moment, terrific silliness the next. I'm obsessed. :)

I wish I had the nerve and "cred" to try starting a thread like this on ExIsle for Drom.  I've always had an urge to dabble (drabble? *groan*) with Beka and Harper and Rommie and the gang...

Well, I never thought I'd do it, but I've become a yaoi-girl...or at least a shounen-ai-girl. A few too many evenings browsing around for Weiss Kreuz spoilers, a few too many glances at fanfictions with intriguing plot summaries regardless of ratings, and here I am a week later digging around the 'net hunting up doujinshi info. and getting teary-eyed over every sweet little shounen-ai scene that comes my way. It's not the boy/boy content that has me surprised at myself really...those sort of hang-ups aren't my thing. It's just that...

Well, in my fanfic reading, I've always had a deep loathing for all things *shippy*. It drives me crazy that so many fanfiction writers have this deep-seated need to take a perfectly interesting, nuanced friendship and force that next step...like there's no way for platonic love to be at all dramatically compelling. This is true for me on both the het and slash sides of the fence, and in pretty much every fandom I think I've ever read in.

And yet, here I am, hip-deep (and sinking fast) into a fandom that has more pairings than you can shake a stick at. I still love the friendship stories best, but I can't deny that there are a couple pairings that hit my buttons in that oh, so *shippy* way. Ugh. And yet...{contented sigh}
