Yo!

I haven't posted anything in ages, and the [community profile] snowflake_challenge going around seems fun, so here's me jumping in.  I kinda started writing this on Day 8 and was going to work backwards, but then I got distracted and it's now Day 14, so... here's Day 8 and Day 7, and I'll probably jump around from there.   :P

Just got back from two weeks mostly-away-from-civilization and feeling a bit disconnected from all the things that were occupying my thoughts before I left, so here's some randomicity to kick-start my brain a bit.

It's meme-week for me, apparently. :)  From [livejournal.com profile] tygermama ...

- list 7 habits/quirks/facts
- tag 7 people to do the same
- don't tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag 'whoever wants to do it'

I, uh.... don't have seven people to tag, so I'm skipping that part. :)

Ugh. I have a Christmas dinner to attend tonight for work. I hate these social occasions anyway, but this one is NORMALLY fairly painless. It's a sit-down affair with drinks beforehand, so I get a couple glasses of wine in me and make sure I grab a seat with my main work friend (and FAAAAR away from the one guy we really can't stand)... and it ends up being no big whoop.

Now, THIS YEAR.

Someone just came in the office to make us *DRAW A NUMBER* to designate which table we'll be sitting at. Because, apparently, it's sooooo complicated for 18 people to divide ourselves among three tables on our own. I already know my friend drew a different number than I did, and I can pretty much guarantee that I'll end up at the same table as the *one* idiot that I want to avoid at all costs, because that's just the way my life goes. So, what should have been a mildly enjoyable evening is now looking like it'll be a night of listening to some pompous asshole drone on and on about how amazing he is while trying to control my urge to eye-roll.

*sigh*

Just some bullet-pointy rambling.
  • Mag7 fandom, I love you so! All the fic and videos that have come across the comms lately have made me ridiculously happy. :)

  • I've also gone rather goofily happy over Jim & Pam's upcoming wedding on The Office. Which is particularly weird if you consider that I've only seen maybe five complete episodes of that series. Some sort of cultural osmosis, I guess.

  • I sat down and did my first official recording session for my PodBang audiofic last night. Listened to it on the way to work this morning, and it seemed to come out all right! I've had such a hard time with the Mag7 podfics I've been working on lately that I was afraid doing a longer story for PodBang was going to be a nightmare. Yay! that this is not the case.

  • I went to a new dentist over the weekend. She was suggesting I get my wisdom teeth out for no real reason except problems that "might" crop up in the future. Their general policy seemed to be "Well, they don't serve any purpose, so you might as well get them out." Which I think was dentist-speak for "Yay! More money for me!"

Next up on my agenda: Elective surgery to get that pesky appendix out... might as well head that sucker off at the pass, too. :P

  • Almost time for this year's IF Comp. I'm looking forward to it... though I'm a little overbooked for October, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to play too many games.

It's always fun to read the various reviews anyway. One of my dream-projects, if I could ever develop any ability to write fanfic, has always been to create an Interactive Fanfic. Not the traditional puzzles-and-mazes sort, but maybe something along the Photopia model... where interactivity is used to immerse the reader in the story and provide different avenues of exploration, even if each of those avenues ends up in the same place in the end. Could be wicked cool with the right story to tell.

Dealing with service people over the phone, and someone has to call you back.

They ask for your home number.    You give it to them.

They ask for your work number.  You give it to them.

They ask: "Which is the best way to reach you during business hours?"

 "AT WORK."  You tell them.

9 times out of 10 in this scenario, even though they've EXPLICITLY asked which number to use, I get home to a message on my answering machine because the idiots have called my home number and not even bothered to *try* the work number...  which leaves me having to wait until the next day to have a chance of resolving whatever issue it is.

*sigh*

*Yawn*

Just starting my first day of work back from a two-week vacation with no internet access and limited cellphone coverage.  (AKA: There was no way in hell I could help anyone at work with anything, even if they did manage to get ahold of me, so I really REALLY didn't have to think about work at all for two weeks straight.)

Needless to say, I do *not* want to be here.  :(

I also picked up a cold somewhere my last couple days of vacation, and the sore-throat/congestion portion of the festivities kicked in overnight.  I've been looking forward to getting home so I can finish up a podfic I didn't have time to complete before I left, but now I have to wait for my voice to get back to normal.  *sigh*

 Well, sunuvabitch.

So, the word has been that "most people" would get $600 for this economic stimulus stuff, so that's the number I had in my head when looking at my finances in the last month.  I even splurged a bit on a DVD order recently because of it, so whoot!  Job well done, Mr. Stimulator.  EXCEPT, the money arrived in my account today and I only got $208.

WTF?!?  I make a decent living, but not good enough that I think I deserve a full 2/3 less than "most people".  I feel like I was bait-and-switched by the US Government!   :(

I feel like the laziest person in the whole world, but also supremely happy.  I'm officially paying a company to cut my lawn this year!  They've done it twice so far, and it is such a wickedly decadent feeling to come home to a beautifully cut & trimmed yard.

I have a pretty small yard.  It can be mowed in less than an hour by me, and much less time than that, I'm sure, by people with better equipment.  And yet, I'm having not one iota of buyer's remorse for this.  The pleasure of coming home and *not* having to debate whether the yard needs mowed tonight is such a huge relief  (can it go another day?  is it going to rain tomorrow?  is it worth letting it get really long if it clogs the mulching mower and takes three times as long when I *do* do it?)   My father thinks I'm a spoiled brat who "should be putting that money toward your mortgage!", but one summer with the blissful absence of yardwork isn't gonna kill me. :)

In other news:
How nice is this?  I called the furniture store to find out how much it would cost to replace the inner-cushions on my couch (the "cores", in furniture-store-lingo, apparently).  I've had my couch for eleven years.  I love it in the way that crotchety old men love their recliners in sitcom-land.  I can't conceive of throwing it out, and it's in good enough condition that I don't have to.  But its cushions are squished flat from all the sitting.  So, I was expecting to have to pay anywhere from $50-$300 for new cushions, and was hitting up my parents to pay for them as my birthday present.   The furniture people called the manufacturer to get a price, and the manufacturer said they'd give them to me for free!!  Yay!!  :)

Ho-hum.  Went to bed early tonight, but woke up at 1:30 with a killer headache.  It's nearly 2:45 now, and I'm wide awake.

Made the mistake of checking work emails, and had a couple that pissed me off.  Screws up my morale for this week majorly, and the damn thing hasn't even officially started yet.

I should look on the bright-side, I guess.  One of the pissing-me-off emails was from someone who works the night-shift, and I was able to actually call her now and address part of the issue without having to purposefully stay up late for it, as I would've had to if I hadn't seen the issue until tomorrow morning.  Small favors.  *sigh*

Haven't posted in a while.  So... some random.

Went to see Sweeney Todd tonight.  There was a point early on (up to and during The Worst Pies in London, mostly) where I thought it was going to fall totally flat for me, but things improved drastically.  I think Sondheim's style of really weaving of the songs through scenes worked *really* well in movie format... at least as Tim Burton did it.  There comes a point where you stop noticing the line between spoken dialogue and song and the whole thing has this beautiful flow to it.  *happy sigh*  On the gore front, at least the throat slitting was pretty obvious about what was coming so I had a chance to squinch my eyes a bit instead of actually watching.  I *really* could have done without the way we also got a shot of each and every corpse dropping head-first down Sweeney's chute to splat in the basement.  Ugh.  But again, easy enough to look away for.  Overall, I left the theater with my "just saw a live show" natural high, so excellent movie! :)

THIS is the best practical joke ever.  :)  Not sure it's worth $400 (and counting?) though.

Had my first ever snafu with ordering-by-mail for Christmas gifts, and I'm stewing a bit over it.  Ordered a couple small trick-boxes from Bits and Pieces last weekend that were going to be used as gift-card-delivery mechanisms.  I hate giving gift cards, so always try to have some little token to go along with the cards.  I get notified at 5:45 PM on Friday that they haven't even *shipped* the items yet and there's no way to get them to me by Christmas.  My focus has turned to making sure that they *don't* ship it now, as the shipping to me and back is going to be practically as much as the gift itself, and it's got me in a tiff to have to pay that for a package that I know in advance is not going to be useful to me.  Been trying to get through to Customer Service all morning, and it keeps hanging up on me after five minutes on hold.  *sigh*

On the music front, I've very much been enjoying Savvy_Elf's Christmas music meme and Pandora internet radio.  I know there are other sites like Pandora (let you put in "seed" songs that you like, and it plays music that fits your tastes).  Pandora works the best for me of any of the stations like it that I've tried.  I love that you can click "Why are you playing this?" and get something like:  "Based on what you've told us so far, we're playing this track because it features mellow rock instrumentation, folk influences, mild rhythmic syncopation, acoustic sonority, and extensive vamping."   It's fun to see my music tastes broken down into their component elements like that. :)

On the upside, I did read a really good book this week:  The Winter Prince by Elizabeth Wein.  More and more, I find that I enjoy this sort of shorter, perfectly told story more than the longer, epic works that fantasy is famous for.  This was actually a reread from many years ago, and I'm thrilled to find out that she's actually written sequels since then.  Can't wait for the Amazon shipment to arrive.  :)  The book itself is an Arthurian-inspired story that focuses on Mordred (Medraut, in the book) and his relationship with Arthur's younger, legitimate son, Lleu.  Just like with Idylls of the Queen a while back, I love the more intimate story here.  There are elements of the greater Arthurian mythos as a backdrop, but the focus is extremely narrow, giving you a detailed look at one or two characters, rather than trying to retell the whole legend.  I think I'm developing a real Mordred-kink.  His portrayal in these two books is so wonderfully conflicted noble and committed to rightness, but unable to escape the taint of his birth.  It pulls at all my woobly little h/c strings, as well as making for a great story as this strong character is torn between his loyalties to Arthur and Morgawse.

Finished R.O.D. the TV, and am not terribly impressed, honestly.  I'd heard such raves of this show, and I wonder if it's one of those things that appeals to guys more than girls for some reason.  I found the series a bit of a slog throughout, but things really took a nosedive once two particular spoilerly characters arrived.  You could tell that it was supposed to up the stakes and add new tension, but to me it just diffused the situation so that the plot got all meandery and trudging.  I can't say I'm a fan.

One Piece dub:  I have to say, I'm a bit disappointed.  I have a tremendous love for Funimation's dubs, and this wasn't outright *bad*... but it's also not their best work, imo.  In particular, Luffy was just way too generic.  So much of the success of One Piece relies on Luffy's charisma.  Sure, he's a doofus... but his boundless/clueless optimism and excitement is so infectious that you can't help but be drawn into his special brand of idiocy.  It's important for his voice actor to sell that charisma, or the show becomes no better than any other shonen jump fare.  I'm not wailing and gnashing my teeth over a one episode sample, or anything, and I'll be first in line for the uncut sets.  But I do hope things improve for the sake of the franchise here in the U.S.

The Dark is Rising movie has apparently opened... or will be soon.  Heard an interview on NPR with Susan Cooper earlier this week, and any excitement I had for the movie is pretty much dead.  This is one of my beloved childhood series, and it sounds like they did a real hatchet job on it.  *sigh*

This could be kinda cool:  Dickens Theme Park.  How cool would it be if this idea expanded?  I'm having visions of an Epcot-center sort of conglomeration of different kingdoms, each based around some distinctive literary theme or setting.  I am so there.  :)

On the other hand, this scares the shit out of me:  Natural History, Bible-Style.

And tied to that link by the fact that they're both sorta religion oriented, I thought the third episode of the "This American Life" tv series was so beautiful:  God's Close-Up

Well, I've shifted my Japan plans to do a European thing instead.  It's going to involve more work for me because I'm doing this one without a tour, but my excitement levels are back up.

I'm also getting into my   "Gee, my birthday is only a month away.  I deserve a present. Or two. Or three." mode.  I don't want to go as crazy as I did on my artbook-spree last year, but I'm definitely eyeing THIS and THIS, with perhaps a smidgen of THIS because there's something frighteningly adorable about chibi-fied Light.

There are also Light and L dolls coming out in the same quality as the Mushishi one, but two more at that price is too rich for my blood, even if they would be perfect alongside that Ryuk figure.  <sigh>

LOL...as I'm typing about Death Note figures, Sam & Dean are on the TV talking about guys in prison dying of heart attacks.  It's not a ghost, guys! It's Kira! :)

Well, I was finally ready to take the plunge and reserve my spot on the PJT  "Endless Summer" tour.  Had my vacation time all approved, plenty of room on the credit card to handle the fees, went to the website to make my reservation.... and suddenly the company is "on hiatus".

*Sigh.*

In other news - it was a pretty good anime meetup the other night.  Had a good turnout, and I actually stayed awake for this one.  The last couple before that caught me on cranky, tired days and I wasn't really in the mood for hours and hours of anime fun.

The Bleach episodes this time didn't even make me want to gouge my eyes out, so that's a tremendous improvement.  :)  But I still don't get what people see in this show.  I'm not anti-shonen by any means.  One Piece is my own true love, and I can even fathom some of Naruto's insane popularity.  But Bleach just feels so hollow and paint-by-numbers to me.  There's no real spark behind any of the characters.  Blah.   (errrr... that "hollow" thing wasn't originally intentional, but I confess to being amused at my own funny when I noticed it.  ;-) )

(Speaking of One Piece, big smooches to Funimation for the licensing news!)

Man, I knew that the Borders Rewards program was too useful to last long, but still...  *sigh*

The old program:  For every $50 spent in the store, you basically get a "10% off entire purchase" coupon good until the end of the next month.  Plus some small percentage of every purchase goes into a "Holiday" account to get additional $X.XX off of purchases made around Christmas.  So if you're like me and spend a lot of money on books & manga, you can stop in once a month, spend $60 (some of which comes off from the 10% coupon), earn next month's coupon, and also earn a little cash towards a bigger discount at the end of the year.  Decent deal, and one that made me change my buying habits from sporadic binge-shopping at whatever bookstore happened to be handy, to a steady budget that was all directed right at Borders.  Even during months when I only had $30-worth of books that I really *needed*, I would usually throw a few more on the pile just to get up to that $50 target.

The new program:  A single $5-off coupon for every $150 spent in the store.  Period.   For my $50/month habit, that's a fair drop from the $15 off I would've gotten with the 10% discounts.  Not to mention the loss of the holiday cash bonus.

They just completely killed any brand loyalty they had built with me...

Gawd, this is shaping up to be a horrible week.

I have this antagonistic relationship going on with one of my clients that just kills my morale every time I have to talk to them, and they've apparently decided to pester me with every little annoyance that they can think of this week, adding to the constant stress of being under a deadline for my *main* client - a company that manages to suck every last ounce of patience from me and then keep push-push-pushing beyond that.  There's an episode of "Witch Hunter Robin" where there's a dude who controls this insect-like swarm that surrounds a victim and sucks out his life-force until he dries up into a mummified husk and then *poofs* into dust.  That's what I feel like right now.

I assume this trend is occurring everywhere, but in the last four months my area has seen an explosion of "Dinner Solutions" joints.  The gimmick for these places is that you pick 12 dinners from a menu (which changes monthly), go to their location, and move through 12 stations in which they have set up everything you need to make the dinner.  You combine the ingredients there, then take the meals home, stick 'em in your freezer, and have a freezer full of ready-to-cook meals all set for the next two weeks.

As someone who *never* cooks, this idea has had a lot of appeal, and I finally went to one shortly before Christmas.  At first, I was a little leary of the results.  There was more work required than I expected to get the food from the freezer to the table, and the recipes weren't quite as customizable as I'd been lead to believe.  (They advertise that you can tweak the recipes if there are certain seasonings or ingredients that you don't like, but half the meals had pre-made elements like sauces that you had no control over, and for a few they had the whole meal pre-made and just handed to you when you got there.

My gripes not withstanding, I've made two meals now, and I am *such* a believer.  They've been *delicious*.  Like restaurant meals... interesting and flavorful and *SO* much better than the crappy food I make myself. :)

And the best part is that the servings are perfect.  I paid $109.00 for the "Half-Portion" option.  It got me 12 meals that serve 2-3 people.  Since I'm single, this is just right for me.  I cook one meal, have half of it the first night and save the rest for later in the week.  No mammoth portions left over or ingredients left to rot because I only used one scoop of something.  $109.00 for 24 dinners =  $4.55 per dinner...  not bad at all. :)    When you consider time saved and the fun of having different menus available to you every month, this is my favorite consumer fad ever.  :)
