Just got back from two weeks mostly-away-from-civilization and feeling a bit disconnected from all the things that were occupying my thoughts before I left, so here's some randomicity to kick-start my brain a bit.
- Sherlock kicked some serious ass. I wanted to drag them both through the screen and squish them *SO* hard... Casting doesn't get any better than this. I'm a bit scared to go looking for comms and fic, though, because while the slashy goodness is pretty much impossible to miss, I think I prefer my modern!Sherlock to be eminently unattainable, and my modern!Watson to be too much of a grown-up to pine, no matter what his leanings might be... and it's one of those things where I'm fairly confident my preferences are not going to synch with most people. ^_^
- I started reading the manga 20th Century Boys over vacation. REALLY cool thriller/mystery with lots of twists and gotchas in the 5 volumes I've read so far. The plot starts out in 1997 with a man gradually becoming aware of a sort of cult with sinister motives that is using symbols and plans that he and his friends made up when they were children. From there it jumps around to the past and future, following their childhood dramas, the present-day fight against evil, and the fallout of that battle. I knew going in that this was a highly-acclaimed series, so I'm not terribly *surprised* that it's good, but it's still refreshing to find such a cunning plot in a manga series.
- One fallout of spending two weeks in a cabin with my mother, the person who has the tv on 24 hours a day, is that I get stuck watching/listening to whatever she has on at any given time. I could kick myself for introducing her to Trading Spaces back in the day, because she can't get enough of these home-design/fashion-advice shows. They're fun in moderation, but oi vey! - moderation this was not. Unfortunately, she's now got me addicted to House Hunters International. Help!
- Speaking of house hunting, I've been tentatively dipping a toe into the water to see if I can afford to build (!) a house. A friend/coworker with a similar (I think) financial situation to mine found a nice development with affordable (I think) homes that is in a good area and only about five minutes from work. I've been living in my "starter home" for the last 15 years, and by all rational measures, it's a perfectly wonderful place for one person, but the thought of being close to work, having space in my living room for more furniture than just the bare essentials, and just having a place that is new and shiny and *different* is just too tempting.
- The answers to the Top Five meme floating around have been extremely fun. It's one of those that seems a little silly to participate in when there are only about four real people reading this (*looks* ...or five? Hi, freesnowcone! :) ) But for what it's worth: Ask me my Top Five Whatevers. Fannish or otherwise. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what, really! And I will answer them all in a comment. Possibly with pictures.

I seem to be managing a significant trip overseas once per decade (for a grand total of three times so far). I'm hoping to at least keep that average and get a few more in before I get old. :) I'd love to do Japan, but going somewhere that I *really* can't communicate is daunting. (I could just walk around going "Kawaii!" and "Sugoi!" and "Gomen nasai!", I suppose.:) )
