Podfic!

Holy crap, I podficced again for the first time in ages! :)   (Well, I finished editing, anyway.  I find it hard to record this time of year... the spring weather seems to make my already kinda nasally/stuffy-nose-sounding voice extra problematic... this podfic was actually recorded last fall.)

ANYWAY.... da-da-da-da!  (Trumpets!)

No Army at My Back, a gen Suikoden story by Tenshi no Korin.  Tremendously fun (with a smidgen of whump) backstory that I consider TOTALLY canon regarding how Flik met Odessa and Viktor.

Tenshi no Korin was literally the SECOND person I asked permission to podfic from back in 2010 and I kept not-getting-around to recording somehow for all these years.  It was mostly a case where my original 2010 "pre-read" recording seemed pretty damn PERFECT to me, but the audio quality was too crappy to make it the "final" product, but then when I'd try to re-read and capture the same "magic", it kept coming out less good.

Hardest phrase to speak in this story:  "Deposited it into"
My favorite phrase in this story:  "And Flik, coiled like a dwarvish clockwork, sprung."

Podfic: Each One for Her Own by Medie

Just a quick note and plug for the fourth Awesome Ladies Podfic Anthology posted as part of halfamoon.    Ten hours of bite-size podfics with great variety of fandoms and readers.

My contribution was Each One for Her Own, by [personal profile] medie ... lovely Aisha-centric fic in "The Losers" fandom.

This fic is a remix of another story that I'd like to record, so for symmetry, I'll probably give "Each One..." a future "standalone" release with its own cover-art and stuff once its sister-story is ready, too.

Podfic: Believer (SPN)

New podfic... Believer, by Paxlux. It's a sequel to the other Supernatural story I did a while back. It's a lovely fic. As a reader, I think my favorite bits were the occasional paragraphs where Sam would reflect on Dean's awesomeness... because they pinged pretty hard on the sort of reasons that *I* love the character, too, so those bits felt very "honest". "Once More with Feeling" and all that. :)

Podfic: Prodigal Son, by kestrelsan

I've been "active" (for certain values of that term) in podfic for about four years now, but I somehow keep failing to participate in amplificathon.   I was feeling bound-and-determined to get SOMETHING posted during the 'thon this year, and while I didn't manage the three that I was originally planning, I've at least got ONE in under the wire. :)

I pimped this story back on one of my snowflake posts, here: http://niko.dreamwidth.org/65343.html  and after spending... way more time with it than I should have needed for a fifteen-minute podfic, I still love it dearly. :)

Podfic: The Losers & Avengers

I seem to be on a trend of doing podfic in threes.   Posted a couple more the last few days.

The dashboard melted (but we still had the radio) by storm_petrel    (The Losers)
Story #2 in my "pretty boys passing out" triptych I mentioned working on a while back.  :)  Beautiful character voice to the writing, and a some sections of a more sarcastic, light-hearted tone than most of what I've done.  (I did end up backing down on some of my more manic takes, though.  I was tending to go way over the top at first.  Hopefully the final version doesn't STILL come off as over-the-top.  :P)

Speaking of over-the-top-ness, this one's... kind of... "experimental", maybe?  I saw this story on the avengerkink community, and it really moved me.  It's totally my cup of tea, anyway, with the angst and the nice hurt/comfort-y conclusion... but I *also* have this podfic bingo card that has a "Read Sadly" square.  I was on a bit of a crying jag the other night, and it popped into my head "Hey, I should go read something sadly instead of sitting here bawling my eyes out" and this story seemed appropriate.  ;)   It's kind of a slow build to Steve having a bit of a breakdown, and toward the end, I just let myself chew the scenery a bit.  It's not my third "pretty boys passing out" fic, but I wanted to post it before I could second-guess myself and water it down.

New Podfic: Three Strikes & You're Out

Getting back onto the podficcing horse with lovely sequal to Strange Bedfellows,  "Three Strikes and You're Out".     Sooooo much fun with all of Ezra's big words   (although, if I never encounter the word "precipitately" in a fic again, I will be happy.  :) )

It seems to be a "thing" to make pages for one's podfic in AO3.  Considering that because I do love AO3, and it's been cool having all my fic in one place, so why not podfic too?    But then, it seems weird to create a whole "work" whose only purpose is to link to something off-site.   Dunno.

I have been going through a phase of "not having my shit together" for... four (!) months now.  My LJ/DW-reading backlog is humongous, but I do have two things that I've needed to get posted for about ever now.

So, #1:  Podfic!  :)

Jojo's "Strange Bedfellows" is posted HERE.

Podfic Blooper Fun

I am so vastly amused at how the brain works (or doesn't) sometimes.

Reading the sentence "...he feels like Josiah has just leaned over the gunwale of a boat and scooped him out of a stormy sea."

I read the line 6-10 times in this recording, because I was having unrelated issues with it, and didn't realize until I got up and walked away for a few minutes that I'd been saying "...gunwale of a ship..." the whole time.  I've caught myself doing things like that before, where my mouth just decides to substitute or rearrange words.  (Lord knows it happens to me often enough in real life, too.)

Now I'm wondering how many times it's happened that I *didn't* catch it.  Ugh.  ^_^

Podfic Feedback Exchange

Here is my response for the Podfic Critical Feedback Exchange.  Some interesting responses have been posted at PodficMeta on DreamWidth and both the LJ and DW versions of [livejournal.com profile] amplificathon.  It's a little eye-opening about the wide variety of preferences that are out there.

Having a bit of whiny writing-angst today.  I came across a snippet of writing this morning that I'd forgotten about.  It wasn't much - just a cute bit of dialogue - but it got me poking around at all the *other* cute little bits I've jotted down over time.  It's made me sad and irritated at myself for not doing anything with them.  I wish the [livejournal.com profile] ficstarting  comm was alive.  It'd be nice to have some sort of structured support-system to get something going.  Self-motivation obviously isn't getting the job done.

On the bright side, the podfic of doom is progressing. :)  Got the "rough cut" finished over the weekend.   There are still two-ish steps to go, but it's nice to have another milestone done and have it down to the niggly technical stuff like timing and clicks and breath noises.

PodBang Post Mortem

Meta-y comments over at amplificathon have me thinking about the PodBang experience, but I don’t have anything interesting enough to post for public consumption over there.

So… putting it in my little corner here instead. :) )

PodBang FTW! :)

Woo-hoo!

PodBang stories are up, and there is some super-awesome-looking stuff posted!  Most super-awesome of all, of course, is the one done especially for ME ME ME!   [livejournal.com profile] cookiemom6067 read SueN's In for a Peso, In for a Pound, and she really went above and beyond the call of duty to get familiar with a brand new fandom and put together a loooong podfic... as a PINCH HIT. Knowing how stressful this process was for me with the full time period to work in, I can only imagine trying to condense the process... especially at this time of year. *_* I'm beyond grateful.

And the fact that it's a *MAG 7* story is just doubly squeeful! It's so exciting to have a Mag7 read *to* me instead of listening to something I read myself and know all the nooks and crannies of it by heart.  Can't wait to give it a listen as I'm driving back and forth to various relatives the next two days. :)

Go check it out HERE

On the other side of the coin, I read nakedwesley's SGA Big Bang story - The Kids are Alright - for [livejournal.com profile] pennyplainknits. I owe huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] nakedwesley for letting me read it, [livejournal.com profile] lunate8 for coming up with FANTASTIC cover-art with not much notice, and [livejournal.com profile] podfic_lover for a wonderful beta. :)   Also to the pod_mod's for fixing my screwed up podbook.

I'm going through a bit of a an "OMG-I-suck-everyone-else-is-so-much-better-than-me" blue period on my actual *reading* of the story, but I'll get over it. I had a great time, anyway, and spending so much time with such a wonderful story has kicked my interest in SGA up several notches, so that's an unexpected bonus, too.

Me Rambling, as usual

The main recording and editing of my PodBang story is complete and off to beta! *phew* I'm so nervous. I was feeling pretty good about how I did when I first finished recording - but during the editing phase, I got to overthinking every little detail, and it made me stressed again. Been over the story too many times to be objective at this point, and the deadline is looming, so I pushed it out the door to be beta'd anyway. *Fingers crossed* that it's all right.

I *am* really looking forward to getting back into the Mag7 podfics that got put on hold while I worked PodBang. It's been fun doing a different fandom for a while, but it'll be nice to spend quality time with the boys. (Speaking of the Mag7 boys... something else I've been pondering... I've been watching a lot of music videos lately, and I'm constantly amazed with how the creators manage to create such different "realities" out of the various clips and source materials. And that got me wondering... would it be possible to create a Mag7 music vid set in the ATF universe? Y'know, using clips from the actors' other work, like folks do with ATF icons? I wish I was technically savvy enough to try it, because it could be ridiculously cool.)

Can't believe it's practically Thanksgiving. I have a holiday get-together with friends this-coming Saturday, and an 80th birthday party for my grandmother on Sunday, and then BAM! into Thanksgiving week and the Christmas season. Ugh.

I think I'm going to plan a trip to NYC for April-ish. I really want to see the new "A Little Night Music", and if the Roundabout would ever get around to selling tickets for the "Sondheim on Sondheim", I'd like to fit that in, too. (Although I'm sticker-shocking over the prices for ALNM, so I may need to scale back a bit.)

Randomocity

Just some bullet-pointy rambling.
  • Mag7 fandom, I love you so! All the fic and videos that have come across the comms lately have made me ridiculously happy. :)

  • I've also gone rather goofily happy over Jim & Pam's upcoming wedding on The Office. Which is particularly weird if you consider that I've only seen maybe five complete episodes of that series. Some sort of cultural osmosis, I guess.

  • I sat down and did my first official recording session for my PodBang audiofic last night. Listened to it on the way to work this morning, and it seemed to come out all right! I've had such a hard time with the Mag7 podfics I've been working on lately that I was afraid doing a longer story for PodBang was going to be a nightmare. Yay! that this is not the case.

  • I went to a new dentist over the weekend. She was suggesting I get my wisdom teeth out for no real reason except problems that "might" crop up in the future. Their general policy seemed to be "Well, they don't serve any purpose, so you might as well get them out." Which I think was dentist-speak for "Yay! More money for me!"

Next up on my agenda: Elective surgery to get that pesky appendix out... might as well head that sucker off at the pass, too. :P

  • Almost time for this year's IF Comp. I'm looking forward to it... though I'm a little overbooked for October, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to play too many games.

It's always fun to read the various reviews anyway. One of my dream-projects, if I could ever develop any ability to write fanfic, has always been to create an Interactive Fanfic. Not the traditional puzzles-and-mazes sort, but maybe something along the Photopia model... where interactivity is used to immerse the reader in the story and provide different avenues of exploration, even if each of those avenues ends up in the same place in the end. Could be wicked cool with the right story to tell.

Podfic & Me

*drumroll*  Da - da da - DAH!

I've been toying with the idea of recording some podfic for a while now, and my new-ish M7-obsession finally pushed me around to doing it.

I started with one of my favorite NotTasha stories, "Running", and have finally posted it.  Links:

Announcement: Post on Podslash
MP3: http://audiofic.jinjurly.com/running
M4B: http://audiofic.jinjurly.com/running-audiobook

This was *so* freakin' fun.  I've always loved reading aloud - I used to read aloud a lot when I was a kid anytime I could (i.e. when no one else was home to think I was crazy  ^_^ ) - and doing it for podfic has the added bonus of helping build the archive for others.  I had a bit of a dilemma over how to do the dialogue, considering I had no hope of matching the accents the boys have in the show, but I'm fairly happy with the results.  Very cool.
