A Gunbuster sequel is confirmed! http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=4945
Gunbuster is one of my first loves in anime...a nice, compact six-episode OVA that runs the gamut from slapstick humor, underdog-coming-out-ahead, and lovely pathos (and a fair share of gratuitous fan service, for the boys). The series was one of the first animes (that I know of) to use the idea of time-distortions caused by FTL travel and the situations that would result when a ship passenger spends a few minutes in FTL, but months or years have passed for the rest of the universe once that trip is over. The open-ended final episode is perfect the way it is, but there's always that little voice that wants to know 'what happens next'?
I really hope that the sequel series ANSWERS that question. So many series have "sequels" that re-use the universe, but to tell different stories with different characters that it's no sure thing. The cast list at the link above doesn't mention Noriko or Kasumi, so that's got me a bit worried. :(
Either way, I love Gainax and I love Gunbuster, so I'm confident that *whatever* they choose to do will be worth watching. This is one show I'll be keeping an eager eye on.
