A bit of a crack crossover, written in SG-1's early seasons when they were still doing mostly random exploring, before the mythology took over.
********************************************
Deep in the heart of a completely unremarkable forest, on a completely unremarkable planet, a Great Stone Circle comes to life, blasting the vegetation that has encroached on its territory in the last age or so into nothingness. A metallic whirring fills the air as an unusual machine rolls from the depths of the circle's center and immediately begins transmitting its results back to a set of observers on the other side of the circle, millions of miles away.
One of those observers shakes his head and sighs.
"Looks boring."
Regardless, he and his team are given a "go", and a short while later, another violent outburst from the Stone Circle spills four adventurers onto the forest floor. Their brief reconnaissance reveals an overgrown path that might once have been a road, leading off to the east and west. As with all true adventurers, the lure of the road proves to be too much temptation, and they decide to split up, heading off in opposite
directions, two-by-two.
From his perch amid the branches of a thickly foliaged tree, a gray cowled man watches them go, and smiles.
******************************
A scene between Sam and Teal'c, walking along the road.
She's only been here 10 minutes, and doesn't like it already. It's eerie...no bird sounds, no breeze...there isn't even the occasional crackle of settling branches that you got in most forests. It feels ancient and empty and frozen in time.
She comments on it to Teal'c, who agrees, except for the empty part.
What does he mean?
He feels like they're being watched.
She glances around, surprised, and a slow prickling goes up her spine. Has he seen anything?
No, which is why he didn't mention it earlier. He will be sure to let her know if he does. She's perturbed. Now she's gonna be all paranoid.
They walk a little further, and the forest opens up ahead of them, coming to the edge of a forest. The road continues past here, widening a bit without the encroaching trees. It runs down hill for a while, then across a plain that they can see for several miles. A post is set into the ground here, and a placard is attached to it. On the placard is some writing and an arrow.
"A signpost?" Sam surmises.
"It would appear so," Teal'c agrees. "I do not recognize the writing, however."
Sam doesn't either. She sets her pack down and gets out a digital camera and takes a few shots of the sign and their surroundings.
It is about time to check in, so she does.
Jack hopes she has good news for him, because he's really bored. She tells him they found a sign, and the road continues, but there's no sign of any end to the road...and she can see about an hour ahead.
Jack suggests they come back this way. They'll..."WHOA!"
....there's a pause.
"Sir?"
"Come on back this way, Carter. We...found something."
"Yes, sir."
She exchanges bewildered expressions with Teal'c, then turns to pick up her pack.
It's gone.
*******************************************************
Jack O'Neill had seen a lot of things in his time with the SGC, but this one topped them all. He and Daniel had come around a bend in the road where it cut through a dense thicket of evergreens, and when their surroundings opened up again, they found themselves on the edge of a clearing, and in the middle of the clearing was this completely amazing thing. Stunned, Jack closed down his communication with Carter, and
stared at the clearing in awe.
"OK," he finally murmured. "This is..."
Words failed him.
"Interesting?" Daniel suggested.
"Bizarre." Jack decided instead.
The road they had followed petered out into a simple, grassy field, and beyond that, there stood...a house.
Not a hut, not a temple, not any sort of exotic alien dwelling like the hundreds they'd encountered over the years, but...a house. A simple, white clapboard house that would have fit in quite nicely in the suburbs of any wholesome American city, down to the pert little mailbox that sat out front. The problem, of course, came in when you considered that they weren't in America or any other place that had ever even heard of America...and it was one thing to have alien cultures growing out of ancient Earth myths, but for something so...normal...to show up here was simply...bizarre. Or interesting, depending on your point of view.
"It looks like they have mail." Daniel pointed out the half-open box with a bit of something sticking out.
"I don't think anyone's gonna be back to pick it up," Jack replied, noticing the boards that barred the door and windows of the house. The place was clearly abandoned. "Let's check it out."
Daniel moved to the mailbox, examining it more closely, while Jack scanned their surroundings, more than a little weirded out by this whole situation. A horrific screeching brought his focus back to the mailbox, and Daniel shrugged sheepishly, demonstrating the source of the sound by closing and re-opening the cover of the mailbox. Jack comes over and looks at what he retrieved from the box. It is a rough, paper-like sheet covered in sharp angles that bore no resemblance to ABC's. Jack
was relieved. He had been afraid that it would turn out to be some neatly stamped Mastercard bill addressed to "Mr. Joseph Alien, End of the Road, P3X-224". Weird alien paper with weird alien writing was much more reassuring.
"What's it say?" he asked Daniel, getting back into the swing of things.
"Ummmm...I don't know."
"What do you mean you don't know? You always know."
"I always know...eventually." Daniel pointed out, still scanning the alien paper. "But as of right now, I don't know."
"Ah...well, while you're busy not knowing, I'm gonna take a look around the place, see if..."
He was interrupted by the crackle of the radio at his ear.
"Ummmm...sir? We have a slight problem." Jack winced. Boring always seemed so much more inviting after the chance was past.
"Yeah, what is it, Carter?"
"My pack is gone."
"Gone?"
"I set it down to take some pictures, and when I went to pick it up...it was gone. Teal'c felt like we were being watched on the way here, sir."
Jack glances over at the house regretfully...he'd wanted to take a look around, but it would have to wait. If there's a native population to deal with (especially a sneaky, thieving native population), it's better for them to stick together. He re-engaged the radio.
"OK, Carter. We'll head back that way. Keep out of trouble until we get there."
